Bible Question: We were about to take communion and the pastor said that if we have an issue with a brother or sister in Christ that needed to be addressed, we should do so or not take communion. Is this biblical? I though that communion was to be done in remembrance of what Jesus had done on the cross for us. I had to go after another sister in Christ as she left in tears feeling that she was unworthy to take communion because she is having difficulty with a fellow believer. |
Bible Answer: Greetings Tftennis! The sacrament of Communion is based on The Lord's Supper spoken of in Matthew 26:26-29, Mark 14:22-25, Luke 22:14-20 and 1 Corinthians 11:23-34. It is the 1 Corinthians 11:23-34 passage that would speak the most directly to your question. Verses 27-28 says, "Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup." Verse 29 says, "For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself." Therefore, I agree with your pastor based on the context of 1 Cor. 11:27-29. You were correct in making peace with your sister in Christ, and then once that has been cleared and forgiven, then you can take Communion with a clear conscience. Blessings to you, Makarios |
