Bible Question: In most churches today modern Christindom has changed to Lord's Supper of wine and bread in the evening to the Lord's "lunch" consisting of crackers and grape juice at about 11:45 AM. The church that I attend does alternate noon and evening times but still serves crackers and grape juice. Given the choices, I'm wondering if the Lord might be more pleased if we just abstained. |
Bible Answer: The idea is to remember, memorialize, honor and reflect on what Jesus did for us upon the cross. There is debate over whether the Passover wine was in fact wine or grape juice. Certainly it didn't have the alcoholic content of our wine today. But in any case grape juice is certainly sufficient. The bread at the Passover meal was made without leaven (yeast) that is why many churches substitute crackers. Our church buys unleavened bread wafers. In any case the purpose of communion far exceeds juice or wine, bread or crackers. Don't miss the blessing focusing on the mechanics. If in fact you feel convicted about not participating then perhaps you shouldn't but make sure not letting the physical get in the way of the spiritual in your life. EdB |
