NASB | 1 Corinthians 11:10 Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 11:10 Therefore the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head, for the sake of the angels [so as not to offend them]. |
Bible Question:
Does anyone know why 1 cor 11:10 says "For this cause ought a woman to have "power on her head" because of the angels. How do we have power on our heads and why because of the angels? I did a search in this forum and found an anwser below that I copied and pasted, but that is from 2001 and we have new people on the forum now who might provide a different answer or can explain it to me better? Thanks . "11:10. *because of the angels.* The insubordination of an uncovered woman (signifying her refusal to recognize the authority of her husband) would offend the angels who observe the conduct of believers in their church gatherings (1 Pet 1:12)" (Ryrie Study Bible, Moody, 1976, 1978). |
Bible Answer: Hi, Winning... Tough verse. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown write, that this refers to the covering of her head (verse 6) as "...the sign of her being under man's power, and exercising delegated authority under him. Paul had before his mind the root-connection between the Hebrew terms for 'veil' (radid), and 'subjection' (radad)." Albert Barnes and John Gill appear to concur. I recall a detailed study of the epistle discussed this difficult passage in that fashion. Sadly, I can't place my hands on my notes. :-( In Him, Doc |
