AMPLIFIED 2015 | Romans 9:32 And why not? Because it was not by faith [that they pursued it], but as though it were by works [relying on the merit of their works instead of their faith]. They stumbled over the stumbling Stone [Jesus Christ]. [Is 8:14; 28:16] |
Bible Question: Could Moses be referred to as a man of faith? In Hebrew 11, he was mentioned but then he did not get to the promised land because of anger. |
Bible Answer: Moses, as you noted is mentioned among those that lived by faith. His punishment of not entering the promised land was a temporal, not eternal punishment. He was punished for striking the rock, not just speaking to it as God commanded. You may also recall Moses meeting Jesus and Elijah on the mountain of the Transfiguration in Luke 9:28-36, so we can assume Moses and Jesus were on good terms. Num 20:8 "Take the rod; and you and your brother Aaron assemble the congregation and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it may yield its water. You shall thus bring forth water for them out of the rock and let the congregation and their beasts drink." Num 20:10 and Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly before the rock. And he said to them, "Listen now, you rebels; shall we bring forth water for you out of this rock?" Num 20:11 Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation and their beasts drank Num 20:12 But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you have not believed Me, to treat Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them." |
