Bible Question: Heb 11:17 speaks of Isaac as Abraham's only begotten son. Why does the bible say this when Abraham had other sons? I also wonder why it was that the second son recieved the blessings ie Able over Cain; Issac over Ishmael; Jacob over Esau; and God seems very angry with these first borns. Is this significant or just coincedence? |
Bible Answer: Hi deep input, Only begotten: a sole or single one..Greek.. Spoken of Isaac (which means laughter) because he was born of his wife. Ishmael was born of a bondwoman,an Egyptian servant to Sarah, not his wife, yet he had a child by her, at Sarahs request. This "only begotten" was done because of God's decree: Gen 21:12, for in Isaac shall thy seed be called. Gen 17:19 God owns all of the universe, He knew Jesus would be born in this lineage. The seed spoken of centuries before it happened, was Jesus, through Isaac, and his decendants. Gal 3:16 Cain and Able: God gave Cain opportunity to repent of his jealousy and disobedience, and he would not repent. Gen 4:6-7 Remember God was the first shedder of blood to cover sin..Gen 3:21..the animal had to be killed before it's skin could be used to make clothes. What animal was it? There is a clue in Mal 3:6 "I am the Lord I change not"..since God does not change, I believe the animal was a Lamb, without spot and blemish. Why? Because that is what Able offered to God, Gen 4:4, Because Jesus is called the Lamb of God, John 1:36, Because the animal slain to put the blood on the doorposts of the Jews in Egypt was the blood of a Lamb, which the death angel passed over when he saw....read Ex 12: I believe as the two boys Cain and Able grew up, Adam and Eve told them what happened in the Garden of Eden, what animal God used, and that God cursed the ground for their sakes..Gen 3:17.. Cain tried to offer to God, products produced from the cursed ground, showing disrespect and dishonour to God. Jacob and Esau: The first born was entitled to the birthright of his Father, which I believe was a double portion, of all his Father had. Gen 25:27-34..tells that Esau counted his birthright as though it was insignificant, useless, worthless, and sold it to Jacob for a bowl of soup, bread, and beans. He did not account God able to deliver him from starvation, or did he count God worthy. God is the one who set up the birthright, it was not a man made thing, therefore, Esau was not despising his earthly Father as much as he was despising God himself. God was not and is not angry with mankind, only they in their willful ignoring of God's instructions and then their disobedience to those instructions. Obedience is the first and last line that God requires in every area of our life, toward him. Ignorance is no excuse, or blatant disobedience when we do know the truth, is no excuse. Ro 1:19-21. It is significant, not coincedence. Always in Christ, C.S.M. |
