Bible Question:
Thank you Searcher, I separate the soul and spirit, why is the question I'm having difficuty with. I find it easy to interchange the heart/soul words in scripture (1KI8;39)(PS62;8)(MK7;6)(JN14;1 and 14;27)(2PE1;19) (2TH2;17)(MK7;6) and others. In Gal4;6 the soul/spirit is divided -- I take this as the heart and/or soul is divided from the spirit? We are discussing this in our men's Bible study. I find it an interesting topic and appreciate any input. Best regards, dogman62. |
Bible Answer: Word study ... heart and soul ... We read "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might" (Due 6:5). The word for heart is lebab, which is translated in the NASB as (number of times): anger 1, breasts 1, conscientious* 1, consider* 5, courage 1, desire 1, encouragingly* 1, fainthearted* 3, heart 185, heart and the hearts 1, heart's 1, hearts 27, hearts like his heart 1, intelligence 1, intended 2, mind 8, purpose 1, thought 1, timid* 1, understanding 2, wholehearted* 1, wholeheartedly* 1, yourself 1 It is the noun masculine form of the root, lebab, a verb ... In Job 11:12 it is "become intelligent" as we read "An idiot will become intelligent When the foal of a wild donkey is born a man". In Song of Solomon 4:9 it is "heart beat faster". Nephesh is the word for soul, which is translated in the NASB as (number of times): any 1, anyone 2, anyone* 1, appetite 7, being 1, beings 3, body 1, breath 1, corpse 2, creature 6, creatures 3, dead 1, dead person 2, deadly 1, death 1, defenseless* 1, desire 12, desire* 2, discontented* 1, endure* 1, feelings 1, fierce* 2, greedy* 1, heart 5, heart's 2, herself 12, Himself 4, himself 19, human 1, human being 1, hunger 1, life 146, life* 1, lifeblood* 2, lives 34, living creature 1, longing* 1, man 4, man's 1, men* 2, mind 2, Myself 3, myself 2, number 1, ones 1, others 1, ourselves 3, own 1, passion* 1, people 2, people* 1, perfume* 1, person 68, person* 1, persons 19, slave 1, some 1, soul 238, soul's 1, souls 12, strength 1, themselves 6, thirst 1, throat 2, will 1, wish 1, wishes 1, yourself 11, yourselves 13 It is the noun feminine form if the root naphash, a verb. It is translated refresh(ed) (Exo 23:12, 31:17). Jesus said "And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind, and with all your strength" (Mar 12:30). Here heart is kardia … think of cardiac. Kardia is translated in the NASB as (number of times): heart 102, heart's 1, hearts 49, mind 2, minds 1, quick 1, spirit 1 … so it does appear to be interchangeable, because of poor translation. Psuche is the word for spirit is translated in the NASB as (number of times): heart 2, heartily 1, life 36, lives 7, mind 1, minds 1, person 1, persons 3, soul 33, souls 14, suspense* 1, thing 1 … ditto on interchangeable issue.
