AMPLIFIED 2015 | Romans 8:23 And not only this, but we too, who have the first fruits of the Spirit [a joyful indication of the blessings to come], even we groan inwardly, as we wait eagerly for [the sign of] our adoption as sons--the redemption and transformation of our body [at the resurrection]. Bible Question: What does it mean by firstfruits of the Spirit? (Rm8:23) |
Bible Answer: Lyn 13, "735 He, then, gives us the "pledge" or "first fruits" of our inheritance: the very life of the Holy Trinity, which is to love as "God [has] loved us."(1 Jn 4: 12; cf. Rom 8:23; 2 Cor 1:21) This love (the "charity" of 1 Cor 13) is the source of the new life in Christ, made possible because we have received "power" from the Holy Spirit.(Acts 1:8; cf. 1 Cor 13) "736 By this power of the Spirit, God's children can bear much fruit. He who has grafted us onto the true vine will make us bear "the fruit of the Spirit: . . . love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control."(Gal 5:22-23.) "We live by the Spirit"; the more we renounce ourselves, the more we "walk by the Spirit."(Gal 5:25; cf. Mt 16:24-26) "1832 The fruits of the Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory. The tradition of the Church lists twelve of them: "charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, chastity."(Gal 5:22-23 (Vulg.))"
