AMPLIFIED 2015 | Romans 8:15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading again to fear [of God's judgment], but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons [the Spirit producing sonship] by which we [joyfully] cry, "Abba! Father!" |
Bible Question: Any thoughts about the specific usage of Abba here (also Galatians 4:6)? Any thought would be helpful. Thanks. |
Bible Answer: Hi ACUYFM06, I go with the NASB right now for Romans 8:15. We "have received a spirit [sic] of adoption as sons by which we cry out "Abba, Father!"" Romans 8:16, "The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit [that we have received] that we are children of God." I believe that it is important to keep in mind that God is Spirit and Jesus is God and we need to have the Spirit of Christ if we are to please God. In other words, setting our minds on thinking of Jesus in the flesh instead of being the Spirit of God will not give us life or peace. The mind set on the flesh will not lead us to know God. Romans 8:9 tells us that the Spirit of God dwells in you if you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit. Romans 8:10 tells us that Christ is in us if we belong to Him. Romans 8:11 tells us that God's Spirit indwells us. Romans 8:16 tells us that the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. Romans 8:3 tells us that God sent His Son in the likeness of sinful flesh; but God (who is Spirit) condemned sin in the flesh. Now we are to walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 1) Romans 8:9, "HOWEVER, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you." Galatians 4:8, "HOWEVER at that time, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those which by nature are no gods. But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how is it that you turn back again to the weak and worthless elemental things, to which you desire to be enslaved all over again?"
