Bible Question:
Is the Old Testament obsolete? I observed someone give witness publicly that some of the teachings of The Old Testament no longer apply due to changes that occured with the coming of Jesus and His dying for our sins. He continued that the New Testament superceeds and negates parts of the Old Testament. I am unaware of what, if anything, in the New Testament supports that position. Is he correct? |
Bible Answer: I look at it this way...we were given the 10 commandments in the Old Testament. In the New Testament their was an "addendum" made called the New Covenant (Jesus)...an addendum is an "addition to"...it does not erase the original but rather adds to it...when Jesus says "I give you a new commandment..." he means something new to us not something to replace the old...and, really, what would it mean if you only obeyed the commandements in the New Testament but broke the Old Testament commandments...you would love your neighbor as yourself then making it okay to kill a man!?? I think we need and were given both the Old and New Testaments for a reason...also, God didn't have the 10 commandments written in sand...they were carved in stone by God Himself...usually when we say "carved in stone" we mean forever! I think God meant forever as well! |
