Bible Question: are the people that died before jesus came , the ones in hades or hell , are they going to be judged on judgement day , and if so will they have the opportunity to go to heaven |
Bible Answer: Romans 5:13 says sin is not imputed when there is no law. Until the time of Moses, the only law given was "do not eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil". Romans 5 says that, although they were sinners, their sin was not imputed because there was no law to show them they were sinners. However, 430 years previous to the giving of the law to Moses, Abraham was declared righteous for his faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ. (Galatians 3:16-17) The Bible calls believers the sons of Abraham because he was the first to be made righteous by grace through faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 4, Galatians 3:6-9, John 8:56). John 8:24 Jesus says that if people do not believe in Him they will die in their sins (seeming to indicate we lose the ability to choose after death). Many people believe (and it is hotly debated) that 1 Peter 3:18-19 indicates that Jesus went and preached the gospel to those in hades or hell after his death before his resurrection. This seams supported by Ephesians 4:7-10 and Psalms 68:18. However, there is no indication that I can see that those currently in hell have another chance. It was a one-time chance for those who died prior to Jesus to believe that he was the promised messiah. |
