AMPLIFIED 2015 | Romans 4:19 Without becoming weak in faith he considered his own body, now as good as dead [for producing children] since he was about a hundred years old, and [he considered] the deadness of Sarah's womb. [Gen 17:17; 18:11] |
Bible Question: A very curious anomaly in this verse. TR (and therefore KJ, NKJ, some other) reads "Not considered" (ou katanoeo). The Wescott-Hort/NA 26 is antithetical in that "ou" (absolute negative) does seem to appear (reflected in NAS, Amp and other popular trans). Within context, it really doesn't change the meaning of the verse, in that A. did not factor the condition of his body into the equation of his belief in God. But, textually the absolute antithesis of the two renderings is interesting. Any thoughts? |
Bible Answer: dmont I'm certainly not our resident language guy in fact I manage to slaughter English let alone any other language. I was surprised Tim hasn't responded but perhaps he is busy and will later. You raise an interest question and in my humble opinion I prefer the NASB reading. To me to say Abraham did not consider his physical state in regards to Isaac's future birth to me actually down plays the faith Abraham did exhibit. EdB |
