Subject: 3 Pictures of Salvation |
Bible Note: Greetings All! Romans 3:24-25 present us with three views of salvation: justification, redemption, and propitiation. 1) Justification indicates a declaration of not guilty before the law. Some have used the 'just as if I had never sinned' definition to explain justification, but this goes too far. Justification does not indicate that one has never sinned, since Rom. 3:23 explicitly tells us that all have sinned. Rather, justification indicates that Christ gift to us makes us not guilty. 2) The second picture of salvation that Paul uses is that of redemption. It is a word used to describe the paying of a ransom. Some have thought that God has payed a ransom to Satan, but this is not Biblical nor contextual. Paul quite clearly is dealing with our relationship to the law in Romans 1-3, and thus it is best to see the ransom as being paid to the Law, not to Satan. It is to the Law that we are in slavery, and Christ's death releases us from it's captivity. 3) The final picture of salvation is that of propitiation. This word refers to the removal of God's wrath. Romans 1:18ff makes it clear that God's wrath is directed at all who sin and reject Him. The death of Christ removes His righteous wrath against our sin. What a beautiful picture of salvation!
