NASB | Romans 2:4 Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Romans 2:4 Or do you have no regard for the wealth of His kindness and tolerance and patience [in withholding His wrath]? Are you [actually] unaware or ignorant [of the fact] that God's kindness leads you to repentance [that is, to change your inner self, your old way of thinking--seek His purpose for your life]? |
Bible Question:
Considering the overall context and argument pattern of the Romans letter: Is Paul talking about God's "kindness" in the Old testament for Jews and/or God's ultimate kindness in the N.T. for all ??? My sense is that, in the context of the entire letter, it is exclusively the former agree? disagree? |
Bible Answer: "Considering the overall context and argument pattern of the Romans letter" Hi, Xenoid! If I understand you correctly "exclusively the former" would be ""kindness" in the Old testament"... I would have to disagree. Paul main argument is the Grace we receive in Christ. He emphasizes his ministry (Apostle to the gentiles), the righteousness gained through faith, the Power of Christ's incarnation, death and resurrection, the conflict that exists, in us, as the Holy Spirit battles the flesh, the Love of God, for us, in Christ, salvation for all, mercy for all, and life in God's service. Much of his argument is meant for us (and Christ's contemporaries, of course). He clarifies that the Jews have not been ignored by God--they have been allowed a period of disobedience so that we may be able to gain salvation... then, at the appointed time the two people will truly be one! God Bless! Angel |
