Bible Question: I am still learning as a christian and need help in understanding the Law. I was taught the Law is the Ten commandments. Is this correct and how did Jesus change the law with his sacrifice? |
Bible Answer: Hi, Kimmy! Welcome to the forum! The word "law" is used in a wide variety of ways in the Scripture. Sometimes it refers to any command of God. Somtimes it refers to the laws of men. Frequently it refers to the law as handed down by Moses. (Note that some translations seek to clarify this latter meaning by capitalizing the word.). The Mosaic Law consists of three broad components: Civil, Ceremonial, and Moral. The Ten Commandments would be included in the Moral Law. But the Moral Law is not solely comprised of the ten commandments. In the passage you have asked about Paul is talking about the Law of Moses, which spelled out to humanity what God means by things like righteousness, obedience, and holiness. God then made this perfectly clear by giving us the example of a perfect man in the life of the Lord Jesus Christ (Hebrews 1:1-3).
