Bible Question: Romans 16:1, why was there a need to appoint Phoebe as the first deaconess? |
Bible Answer: Hi, Ann... The word "servant" in this passage does, indeed, have the same root as the word "deacon" that we see in 1 Timothy 3:10. However, it does not necessarily follow that Phebe was actually appointed to the office of a deacon. All we know of her from Scripture was that she carried Paul's letter to the congregation in Rome. The Romans had a very good mail system. Unlike today, however, it could only be used for official Roman business. Everyone else had to send their communications through other means.
