Bible Question (short): A DEBATE ON GIVING TO GOD |
Question (full): A friend and I are in a long-running debate regarding giving of our tithes and offerings, and the scriptural promises that reflect them. Here are the two positions, I'll not say who holds which one: 1. Friend #1 stands of Luke 2:38: "Give and it shall be given to you, good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over......" On his annual income tax returns, he itemizes his deductions and includes gifts to church in the deductions. His position is that one of the ways God gives back as a result of his giving is through a "tax break". Friend #1 further maintains that by doing so, it places him in a position to give even more because he also tithes from his income tax refunds. 2. Friend #2 believes that giving is to be private, just between him and God. He gives anonymously to his church each week with cash contributions. He believes that using the tax codes is taking the opportunity for God to bless him out of God's hands through human manipulation (i.e., the tax codes). I might add that both friends give with the "right" intentions. Neither gives just to receive. And both friends are committed to tithing as their minimal level of giving. Friend #1 argues to #2 that by not itemizing his deductions and receiving the added tax refund to which he is entitled, friend #2 is not being the best steward of God's money. Friend #1 argues that #2 is intentionally leaving money in the not so capable hands of the federal government while he COULD be sowing it into a ministry where lives could be impacted. Would any and all please weigh in on this topic? Thank you and God Bless! JK |
