NASB | Romans 13:4 for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Romans 13:4 For he is God's servant to you for good. But if you do wrong, [you should] be afraid; for he does not carry the [executioner's] sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an avenger who brings punishment on the wrongdoer. |
Bible Question: I am curious about military service in times of war, as a christian. I have been shown several passages that support service, and have been given many opinions (sometimes linked to a verse, usually the commandments, or "turn the other cheek") that denounce that service, both views towards service in actual combat. In particular, I am looking for the supportive verses, but I am open to seeing both supportive and negative views. |
Bible Answer: Goodmorning Flick, Greetings and welcome to the forum. I was just reading Doc's posting to you and having spent sixteen yars in the navy I've heard arguments from both sides of the isle. One thing I want to encourage you with before I go any further and I do this with believer and non believer alike is that you give 2Peter 1:20,21 strong consideration as you research this issue yourself. When we do that and devote time to Gods Word Things become clearer than they otherwise would have. Now with all that in mind I'll tell you where I stand without being too one sided.I've had people tell me that you couldnt be a diciple of Jesus and be in the military. I've had more than my fair share of heated dicussions over this subject,I wish I knew then what I know now.The bible is loaded with accounts of men of God who were Warriors,David being a prime example.David is the only one in the bible that God refers to as a man after His own heart.David was a great and mighty man of God,yet he went into battle many times. There is no contradiction here. Cornelias was a Roman Centurion (Comander of 100's)yet it say's his prayers went up before God as a memorial.Acts tells us he was compassionate and giving. Now did he stop being a soldier after his conversion? I dont think so. At least there is no record that I can find that states otherwise. Doc's recomendation of Romans 13 is a good one.Having been on both sides of this issue I will close with this,no matter what sector of society be it civilian or military that we serve in lets insure that in what ever capacity we serve or work lets do it all to the glory of God. In Christ, lionheart PS. I've been on both sides of this issue myself. I hope this helps. |
