AMPLIFIED 2015 | Romans 12:3 ¶ For by the grace [of God] given to me I say to everyone of you not to think more highly of himself [and of his importance and ability] than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has apportioned to each a degree of faith [and a purpose designed for service]. |
Subject: What does "a measure of faith" mean? |
Bible Note: Just to add a little more here... The Ryrie Expanded Edition NASB states, "In introducing the subject of the use of spiritual gifts, Paul warns against highmindedness and exhorts sober-mindedness, based on the 'measure of faith' to work for God that has been given each one." The MacArthur NKJV Study Bible comments, "'measure of faith.' The correct proportion of the spiritual gift- or supernatural endowment and ability- the Holy Spirit gives each believer (see note on 1 Peter 4:10,11) so he may fulfill his role in the body of Christ (1 Cor. 12:7,11). "Faith" is not saving faith, but rather faithful stewardship, the kind and quantity required to use one's own particular gift (cf. 1 Cor. 12:7,11). Every believer receives the exact gift and resources he needs to fulfill his role in the body of Christ." |
