Bible Question:
I am a former Catholic and now have a devout Catholic asking me where it says in the Bible that all we need to be saved is to accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. I've seen many verses telling us of this but none that I found that say those exact words. Where can I find that? He is very defensive when it comes to the Catholic religion and says Jesus is NOT the only way, that you need to follow tradition as well. Jesus warns us of this in the Bible though, overly religious law-makers who babble their own rules out. Help! |
Bible Answer: I was once a catholic myself. I know how difficult it is to witness to staunch Catholics. I have a few scriptures that might help you to witness to your friend. John 14:6 states: "I am the way, the truth and life: no man cometh unto the father but by me." Ephesians 2:8 states "For by grace we are saved through faith and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." I think that is the main scripture. We don't have to work for gifts. All we have to do is receive the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. We cannot attain salvation through works, if we did we would never attain salvation. We strive to be as perfect as we can but we will never attain perfection while on this earth. When we sin 1 John 1:9 states "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness". There is another thing that I feel led to discuss with you that is prevalent with Catholics. They believe in praying to saints. 1 Timothy 2:5 states: "For there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. I hope these scriptures help you in witnessing to your friend. It is not easy but with the help of the Holy Spirit, you can do it. I led my Mother to the Lord one month before she died and if there was ever a staunch Catholic she was definitely one. Nothing is impossible with the Lord. Just pray that the blinders would be removed from your friends eyes and the truth would be revealed to them. I hope this is a help to you. |
