Bible Question:
I love my NIV. I also feel that it is a truly inspired revision of the word and that the Lord led me to it. However, my faith in this particular version was just jolted when I was reading the book of Acts and discovered with the help of my "Henry Comentary" that it OMITS verses that are in the KJV. Specifically Acts 8:37. If as I have determined from my research, this is due to the dateline of the manuscripts, why is the OMITTED verse number simply skiped over, ie 35 36 38 rather than continued in numerical sequence? |
Bible Answer: GeorJoy: The KJV was translated as a word for word, as best they could with the best manuscripts they had at the time. The NIV is a Dynamic Equivlant translation. Which means it translates thought for thought. Wycliff, and New tribes Ministries all use this method in getting the Scripture into peoples native tongue. In some languages ther are no words to say exactally what the manuscripts say. For example ther are at least four words for love in the Greek, and only one word in English. So a longer wording of the thought behind the word is used in translating the word love. The NIV is a good version, and very good merit for a thought for thought translation. Having said that I like the Updated NASB best of all. That's just my opinion, and I do not work for Lockman, so this is just how I see it. All translations have some small problems, as there is no "perfect" translation, because mankind is not perfect and no language fits exactlly word for word. You can have confidence that any mistakes are so small that there is nothing that changes the doctrine of Salvation by Jesus Christ and Him only! Hope this added information helps. justme |
