Bible Answer: Greetings, In addition to what jlpangilinan stated, eunuchs, who were ususally incapacitated in some way were appointed to guard harems found in all the royal palaces of Egypt, Babylon, Persia, and Ethiopia. Eunuch's, who were emasuculated and deprived of their virility, were safe with the charge of wives, concubines, and the female apartments of the palace. The king, in the Persian palaces gave commands to the women through the Eunuch's and thus kept men at a distance. Daniel and his companions were possible mutilated so as to become eunuchs of the Babylonian king. Prisoners of war were often made eunuchs. The Euthiopian, although a eunuch, was a great man who rode in a chariot and had many attendents. As chamberlain to the queen of Ethiopia, he had charge of all her treasures. So the Ethiopian and a few eunuchs of the OT period may have been un-mutilatedmen. Potiphar, for example, is spoken of as a "eunuch", or as the Hebrew implies, an "officer", but he was a married man with a child.
Sometimes eunuch is synomymous with cupbearer. Although eunuchs became important persons, aquiring position and power, their acquistion did not remove the sense of degradation and loss. The barbarous practice of self-mutilation an mutilation of others, prevalent throughout the Orient, carried with it serious religious disabilites. The practice was abominable to the Jews as a people (Lev 22:23-25). Eunuchs were regarded as dry and useless wood. The Law excluded eunuchs from public worship for two reasons. First, because self-mutilation was often performed in honor of a heathen god. Second, because a maimed creature of any kind was deemed unfit for God's service (Lev 21:21; 22:24).
