AMPLIFIED 2015 | Acts 5:34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law [of Moses], highly esteemed by all the people, stood up in the Council (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court) and ordered that the men be taken outside for a little while. |
Bible Question:
We know that Gamaliel was a ally of the apostles. But do we know anything else about him? How long had he been an ally? What was his purpose? Who did he serve as a teacher of the law? |
Bible Answer: Gamaliel menas "my recompenser (or reward)is God" He wanted moderation and calmness when the apostles were brought before the council Acts 5:34-40). We know that Paul studied under him (22:3). It is possible he was the son of rabbi Simeon, and grandson of the famous rabbi Hillel. Hillel, is referred to as authority in the Jewish Mishna. He was a Pharisse, and therefore the opponent of the party of the Sadducees. He was noted for his learning, and was president of the Sanhedrim during the regins of Tiberius, Caligula, and Claudius, and died in A.D. 52. Steve Searching Scripture |
