Subject: The Language that Jesus Spoke |
Bible Note: Dear Mark, No one would dispute that Jesus spoke Aramaic, as the article you cite states. What is interesting, though, is whether He also spoke Greek. There's a solid, scholarly paper published in Biblical Archaeology Review (Sep/Oct 1992) by Joseph Fitzmyer entitled "Did Jesus Speak Greek?" Regardless of the way one falls on this question, it is well worth the read. It gives a clear linguistic perspective of the culture of first century Palestine. The article is available online. (I'd paste the link here, but it is one of those kind that is over 100 characters in length, full of tildes and slashes and stuff... perhaps even a few jots and tittles!) To find it Google: Biblical Archaeology Review Fitzmyer 1992 Jesus Speak Greek 18:05. In Him, Doc |
