AMPLIFIED 2015 | Acts 20:35 "In everything I showed you [by example] that by working hard in this way you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, 'It is more blessed [and brings greater joy] to give than to receive.'" |
Bible Question: How complete are our Gospels? Have the authors missed anything Jesus' said? In this context Paul is defending his ministry to the Ephesian elders. |
Bible Answer: Excellent observation, Steve! "It is more blessed to give: This saying of Jesus is not found in the Gospels, but through Paul’s knowledge of it has been recorded here." (Nelson NKJV Study Bible) "20:35 remember the words of the Lord Jesus. This saying is not recorded in the Gospels." (Ryrie NASB Study Bible) I am a firm believer that the Gospels were written with a 'purpose' in mind, and that it would have been impossible to put every single word that He spoke or everything that He did into writing.. However, Paul has obviously learned of this, most likely from the other apostles such as Peter. True, Paul is defending his ministry here, and quoting Jesus from something that He said that is not recorded in the New Testament. I believe that our Gospels are 'complete' in a sense that they have included everything that we 'need' for our salvation and serve in His name. All the 'essentials' are there. However, there is no way that any writer could possibly record everything that Jesus did.. "Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name." (John 20:30-31) "And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were* written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would* not contain the books that would* be written." (John 21:25) I really wish that we could know more about these 'other things', my friend!! :) Nolan |
