Bible Question:
Acts 2:38 above: Most denominations teach the baptism in this verse is by water. There is a lot of discussion on how it is performed, Sprinkle, Dip, Imersion, etc. but never a question on whether it is water or some other way. If it is water then when will John the Baptist' prophecy in Matthew 3:11 "I baptize you with[Or in] water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. I believe all agree the one to come after John is Christ so when will, did this form of baptism by the Holy Spirit and Fire take place. Ibelieve the first time was in Acts 2:1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Here we see the Apostles and up to another 108 people receiving the baptism with Holy Sirit and fire for Peter says in verse 39 they would receive the "Gift of the Holy Spirit." A supporting verse, I believe, is in Acts 19:1 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2 and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." 3 So Paul asked, "Then what baptism did you receive?" "John's baptism," they replied. 4 Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus." 5 On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. 7There were about twelve men in all. Bible Answer: Greetings Fellow Heir, and welcome to the forum. I think that it is water baptism that is mentioned in the following verse. Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. The reason I believe this is water baptism is because the baptism of the Spirit will occur at the point in the verse when they Repent. The word repent is on one side of the coin and faith in Jesus is on the other. It is impossible to repent without having faith in Jesus Christ because repentance is directional; it is turning away from something to something. i.e. turning from what you have been doing and start trusting in Jesus and what he did. I think the following verse will back up what I have just suggested if when you read it you will consider the progression of events that lead up to the sealing. Ephes. 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, The sealing wasn’t the work of the Spirit, but actually the Holy Spirit Himself. 2 Cor. 1:22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts. The word earnest, in the English comes to us from the Greek word ARRHABON, which in essence is a down payment. My two cents worth, CDBJ |
