AMPLIFIED 2015 | Acts 2:38 And Peter said to them, "Repent [change your old way of thinking, turn from your sinful ways, accept and follow Jesus as the Messiah] and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ because of the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. |
Subject: What's in a Name? |
Bible Note: That's what baptism does. It puts us in association with the Person or Persons Who's Name is used. It denotes ownership. (See Vine's Expository of New Testament Words) That's why it doesn't matter if it's in Jesus name or the Father, Son and Holy Ghost (all Three are present in Acts 2). Why is it everyone thinks that Acts 2:38 is a step-by-step formula? The simple truth that I see from the Bible is that the majority text presenting the gospel of Jesus Christ does not even mention water baptism. Therefore I have no reason to accept Acts 2:38, and the 5 or 6 other pet-peev scripture, to be a set formula for salvation. The word "for" in Acts 2:38 needs to be considered. Do you go to the doctor FOR a broken arm? Is it TO GET a broken arm or because you already have one? In the case of Acts 2:38 we are to be baptized in Jesus Name FOR (because of) the remission of our sins. Back to "association". Being baptized in the Name of Jesus puts us in association with the One who has dealt with the sin issue in our behalf. Thanks for your time! |
