Bible Question:
Acts 2:1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. (1Co 11:20 KJVA) When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper. (1Co 14:23 KJVA) If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? Is there an emphasis on being together in one place? How would that apply today? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Thomas8, I believe that the Scripture references that you have pointed out do very well to point out that fellowship with other Christians is an integral part of our growth and endurance as Christians. "For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst." Matthew 18:20 "and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near." Hebrews 10:24-25 Scripture exhorts us not to forsake fellowship (Hebrews 10:24-25) since Jesus said that He is present when we are together in His name (Matthew 18:20). In Acts 2:1, while it is difficult to imagine how the large crowd mentioned in verse 5 could have observed the activities in the upper room or congregated in the narrow streets outside the house, the fellowship itself was very important, because it provided the absolute perfect setting for the Holy Spirit to make His entrance, so that they could all bear witness to one another and to the crowd when everyone spoke in his own native tongue. Three thousand souls were saved on that very same day! In 1 Corinthians 11:20, we see the Lord's Supper being referred to, which was to be done in remembrance of Him (Luke 22:19). This meal instituted by Jesus is not only a memorial of His death, but it is also a fellowship meal of unity. It acts as a symbol of our anticipation of Christ's return, when all of God's promises will be fulfilled (1 Cor. 10:16,17; 11:23-26). And we are strengthened by each other and in Him when we meet together in unison to partake in the Lord's Supper. In 1 Corinthians 14:23, Paul continues to challenge the Corinthian church to serve and benefit each other above all, rather than attacking and neglecting each other, seeking only specific gifts. Fellowship is stressed by Paul in Corinthians as being both an opportunity for being used by the church and a means for being strengthened by the church. As every believer is entrusted with different gifts given by the Holy Spirit, we again see just how precious and integral it is to fellowship with each other so that we can share our gifts with those who have different gifts, building up the body of Christ. In all three Scripture verses that you have referred to, we can provide application for this present day, since it is much better to have more than one Christian present to affirm the Gospel when it is preached, since a 'strand of three is not easily broken' (Ecclesiastes 4:12). And we can only strengthen and encourage one another when we act in unison in partaking of the Lord's Supper together, so that we can correct any wrongs that we have against any brother, and encourage each other in looking forward to Christ's return. Perhaps the last verse (1 Cor. 14:23) provides the clearest example of the importance of fellowship in today's time, since we will increasingly need the strengths of each other as the time gets ever closer to the Second Coming of our Lord (1 Peter 4:7-11). Blessings to you, Makarios |
