Bible Question: What sights, sounds, smells and emotions do you think the other prisoners were experiencing while imprisoned with Paul and Silas. Acts 22-26 |
Bible Answer: shael Prisons of the time and this particular one (having been verified by a friends visit)contained an open sewer system through which water ran. The cells bottoms were either open girds through which everything fell, or they had very slanted floors with a narrow ledge and timber on which to lean. The walls are covered with a thick foul smelling slime. You can imagine the smells in a dark dank environment. The only other sense that functioned was sound as you hear the moans of victims all around you. Most probably Paul and Silas was chained to the wall with enough slack for them to put their feet on the ledge and lean back on the bar resting their heads on their up turned arms. If they were real quiet they probably could hear the ping as drops of the their blood which flowed from their bodies hit the water beneath them. Silas might have leaned over to Paul and said, “if you only had kept your mouth shut we wouldn't be in this place. I told you there were many rich people in this city and not to stir things up.” Paul then said, “ look I have an idea lets sing!” Silas would say “sing”?!! Paul replied yes “sing, here I will start and you just jump right in.” I can almost imagine the raspy tortured voices as they began. But suddenly their strength began to return and their voices became clear. In short order they were singing at the top of their voices praises to God. I imagine the other prisoners suffering in silence first noticing the horrible sounds but as they listened they hear clearly the sounds of praise to God. Perhaps some shifted in their cell to move closer. Maybe some began to recognize a song they once heard sitting at the feet of their mother or father. I hope that one or maybe two began to reflect back on their life and what a waste they had made of it. Some in their despair became curious at how these two men beaten and chained could even conceive of singing. Didn't they know their life may be required of them come morning? Some I'm sure shook their heads and may have even holler “pip down”. Yet here in this dark stinking cells chained to walls thick with slime from who knows what these to men backs laid open began to sing praised to God. I don't know but I think all of heaven may of hushed to hear that chorus of praise. Not biblically supported but I think that may have been how it happened nonetheless. EdB |
