NASB | Acts 15:2 And when Paul and Barnabas had great dissension and debate with them, the brethren determined that Paul and Barnabas and some others of them should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders concerning this issue. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Acts 15:2 Paul and Barnabas disagreed greatly and debated with them, so it was determined that Paul and Barnabas and some of the others from their group would go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and the elders [and confer with them] concerning this issue. |
Bible Question: In Acts 15:2, Paul and Barnabas go to Jerusalem to meet with the "apostles and elders about this question" (of circumcision for new Gentile believers). I know that Peter and James are there, but are the other apostles--the remaining 11 who walked with Jesus plus Matthias (Acts 1:26)--in Jerusalem also? Are they the "sect of Pharisees" (Acts 15:5) who rose up and argued that circumcision was necessary? |
Bible Answer: The Bible provides only limited detail about the composition of an early governing body, most of the information being in Acts chapter 15. That account indicates that in 49 C.E. that a group of Christian men forming the governing body consisted of “the apostles and older men in Jerusalem.” Who were these?—Acts 15:2, 4, 6. James, the half brother of Jesus, presided at that meeting to discuss the question of whether Gentile converts to Christianity had to keep the Mosaic Law, including circumcision. The apostle Peter shared in that discussion. The account speaks of Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas as “leading men among the brothers,” but it does not specifically say that they were part of that governing body in Acts 15. (Acts 15:7, 13, 22) The “sect of the Pharisees” are believers who were once associated with the Pharisees, the very ones who took a side against Jesus. The ones of that sect who became believers also brought their old ways (you may say) into the congregation and tried to insist that circumcision was necessary for believing Gentiles in order to get saved. Of course, the book of Acts tells the outcome. Hope that helps. |
