Bible Question: What does "taking from among the Gentiles a people for HIS name" mean? |
Bible Answer: Hi, raffa... Sorry, I must not have been explicit enough. John Gill writes that this "taking from among the Gentiles a people for His name" should be understood as "[taking a people] for Himself, for His own glory, to call upon His name, and to be called by His name, to bear His name, and support His Gospel, cause and interest: the distinguishing grace of God may be seen herein; it was grace to visit them, to look upon them, when for many hundreds of years He had overlooked them, He had taken no notice of them; and it was distinguishing grace to take some out of them, to be a special and peculiar people to Himself; to separate them from the rest by His powerful and efficacious grace, and form them into a church state, that they might show forth His praise and glorify Him." "I will sow her for Myself in the land. I will also have compassion on her who had not obtained compassion, And I will say to those who were not My people, 'You are My people!' And they will say, 'You are my God!'" (Hosea 2:23 NASB) But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY.
