NASB | Acts 13:46 Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first; since you repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Acts 13:46 And [at the same time] Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and confidently, saying, "It was necessary that God's message [of salvation through faith in Christ] be spoken to you [Jews] first. Since you repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, now we turn to the Gentiles. |
Bible Question: Paul's missionary work created a controversy in the church. What was the nature of the Jew-Gentile controversy and how did the church handle it? |
Bible Answer: Greetings JMoon03, Acts 13:44-14:4 shows that Paul and Barnabas realize that they are called also to be "a light to the Gentiles" (v. 47), since God "had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles" (14:27, NKJV). It is of no coincidence then, that the very next Chapter, Acts 15, chronicles the Council of Jerusalem, and how the church addresses the controversies of legalism, how to handle Gentile believers, the testimony of Paul and Barnabas, and the decision of the Council in regards to Gentile believers.
