Bible Question: In Acts 12:21-23, was Herod giving a false teaching? Is that why God struck him down? It said "Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died." But why would God kill him because Herod did not give praises? Many people did not give praises to God, but they were not struck down and eaten by worms. |
Bible Answer: Three points come to mind: Notice that the people were worshipping Herod by saying 'it is the voice of a god, and not that of a man'. After Herod was struck down, notice the benefit: "But the word of God grew and multiplied." - Acts 12:24 Notice how people responded to the apostle Paul being bitten by a poisonous snake and not suffering any harm: "They waited, expecting him to swell up or suddenly fall down dead; but when they had waited a long time and saw no misfortune come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god." - Acts 28:6 The Apostle Paul (taking no credit) responded to this thinking by "Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him." - Acts 28:31 The things written down in the scripture are an example for us (Rom 15:4) "For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope." Yes, there is a lesson to be learned when we elevate ourselves in other's eyes and don't properly credit God. A concluding scirptural thought on this matter is found in 1 Cor 4:7 "For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?" |
