Bible Question:
Nolan, Thank you for your encouragement. I find your view interesting. The O.T. ends with the death of him who prepared the way for Christ, eh? However, if you relate the end of the O.T. to John the Baptist, why not end it with Jesus Christ's baptism? Why use John the B's death? Press On, Christian |
Bible Answer: Greetings NazMan! If we examine Matthew 11:7-19, we will see a tribute from Jesus to John the Baptist. Jesus says in verse 11, "Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he." John belonged to the age of the old covenant, which was preparatory to Christ. The least New Testament saint has a higher privilege in Christ as a part of His bride, the church, (Eph. 5:25-27,32) than John the Baptist, who was only a friend of the bridegroom (John 3:29). [paraphrased from Zondervan's NASB Study Bible] If we look at John's last testimony in John 3:22-36, we notice that John is not the Christ, but His "forerunner" (3:28). In this way, John was the last prophet that God spoke through before God Himself came as the Messiah. Since John was the last prophet before Christ, then that is where I draw the line between the Old Testament and the New, since the arrival of Jesus signals a 'new' testimony which carries the promise of eternal life! (John 3:32-36) That is why I would view the Old Testament as ending with the death of Christ's forerunner, John the Baptist, and the New Testament beginning with Christ's Resurrection, which was the fulfillment of His calling. Your Brother in Christ, Nolan |
