NASB | John 9:4 "We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | John 9:4 "We must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; night is coming when no one can work. |
Bible Question: Why use the word "We must work--when KJ/NKJ reads, "I must work--? I use NASB while teaching two adult clases and when asked why "We-" vs "I" is used in NASB I said 'His remark was directed to disciples and thus to all of His own'. 0n reflection I will add at this weeks classes.."He is referring to Triune God". Help! RSVP Thanks Jerry |
Bible Answer: Hi jerrynmyrt, Welcome to the forum. Manuscripts differ for this verse. One says that "It is necessary for Me" and another says that "It is necessary for Us". I go with the emphatic "I must work". This is a place that Jesus is claiming to be God and to be doing His works, for God the Father sent Him. Jesus is claiming to be the (Light) of the world. See the upper case Light in the newest NASB copyright. In John 8:12 Jesus again claimed to be the (Light) of the world. It is because He is the Light of the world rather than just a light as we are that I choose to go with "I must work". The contrast is between the Man who works in the daylight and the man who can not work in the night. If you go with "We" be thinking of the Triune God as you say. For even if this word were not the beginning of the sentence it should be capitalized for it speaks of Deity. Indeed, John 10:30 is a good verse to compare here. "I and the Father are one." John 9:4, "I must work the works of Him..." John 5:19, "...for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner." These are all good verses to compare. From the heart, Ray |
