Bible Question:
we are able to believe in put our faith and trust in Christ because of the Holy Spirit. How does John 7:39 indicate that the Baptism with the Holy Spirit was a separate experience for those who are born again? |
Bible Answer: Hi, Kerri1... Welcome to the forum! I don't think that the doctrine of a second filling of the Holy Spirit can be supported with a sound exegesis of Scripture. Nevertheless, it certainly cannot from the verse that you are asking about. At the moment that Christ was speaking the words in John 7:39, the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Redeemed was yet to come (cf John 16:7). The Holy Spirit comes after Christ has died, risen, and ascended (Acts 1:7-11) -- at the beginning of the New Covenant -- as the gift and seal that He promises when He is seated on high (cf Hebrews 1).
