AMPLIFIED 2015 | John 6:50 "This is the Bread that comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. |
Bible Question:
I wonder why the auxiliary verb "may" is used, without being definitely stated. In other words it would be better to use "can" Your fathers ate the manna in the desert but this is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that a man may eat it and not die. John 6:50 |
Bible Answer: Actually it is definately stated. The verbs "eat" and "die" are both in the subjunctive mood. The subjunctive mood indicates probability or objective possibility. It is most often used in "if this . . . then that . . . clauses. The way in which this is expressed in English is by use of words like "might," "may," or "let." So in other words what you see as an "auxilary" verb is actually inherent in both "eat" and "die." Machaira |
