Bible Question: In John 4:6 at what time did woman normaly go to the well for water? |
Bible Answer: Greetings MikeBasquette, John 4:6 "Jacob's well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour." [ESV] Here is a bit of commentary about the timeframe.. "The sixth hour - About twelve o’clock noon. This was the common time of the Jewish meal, and this was the reason why his disciples were gone away to buy food." (John 4:6 - Albert Barnes' Notes on the Bible) "Give me to drink - This was in the heat of the day, and when Jesus was weary with his journey. The request was also made that it might give him occasion to discourse with her on the subject of religion, and in this instance we have a specimen of the remarkably happy manner in which he could lead on a conversation so as to introduce the subject of religion." (John 4:7 - Albert Barnes' Notes on the Bible) I don't believe that there was any common, specific time that Samaritan women went to draw water, but it just so happened, that in the heat of the afternoon this woman met Someone of whom she did not expect, but would change her life.
