Bible Question:
Is there a time gap between the "now is" and "an hour is coming"? Does anyone know the Greek construct? Does it help? I ask because after the Gospels, worship only appears four times, until Revelation, where it occurs 11. Searcher |
Bible Answer: Greetings Searcher! The Greek text literally reads: "But is coming hour and now is, when the true worshippers they will worship the Father in spirit and truth, in fact (kai yar) the Father such as these seeks those who worship Him." This is a very literal translation, including the actual word order. Notice that both phrases are actually used in this verse. The "hour" is both "coming" and "now is". The same exact phrase is also used in John 5:25 and a similiar phrase is found in John 4:21 and 5:28. The meaning of the construct seems to simply indicate that a dramatic change has or is about to take place. I'm not sure where you got your numbers for the frequency of the word 'worship'! The word used in John 4:23 is 'proskuneo' and it occurs 7 times: Acts 7:43, 8:27, 10:25, 24:11, 1 Cor. 14:25, Heb. 1:6, and 11:21. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
