Bible Note: To quote you, you said: "The Greek grammar in this passage cannot be talking about physical birth and spiritual birth as two separate events. The grammar here clearly indicates that the birth of water and the birth of Spirit are simultaneous. It is taking it out of its original linguistic context to try to make this refer to 2 separate events. Besides if Jesus is talking to people who have already been born physically (Duh!) then why should he tell them this requirement for salvation?" Let me ask you this then. In verse 4 Nicodemus asked: "can a man enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? So we see Nicodemus himself was asking whether Jesus was speaking of a physical birth. But thats not the whole of the matter: in verse 6 Jesus distinguishes between the two births to clarify what He meant Jesus said in verse 6 "That which is born of the flesh (physical birth) is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit (meaning spiritual birth in contrast to the previous mentioned physical birth) is spirit. So the water in my opinion can indeed mean the water or fluid of a physical birth. I merely state what I have come to believe. I respect the opinion of those who will disagree with me and others who believe this way. |
