Bible Question:
How is scripture properly quoted, specifically the book, chapter, verse, and translation? For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16) KJV What about part of a verse? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, (Acts 16:31a (KJV)) |
Bible Answer: I could be wrong, but I don't think you will find the answer to your question in a book of English grammar or in any standard style guide (such as the one published and used by the New York Times.) As a writer, what I would say is: 1) It is essential that you give scripture references in a style (format) that is easily understood by all. 2) Whatever style you choose, the key thing is to BE CONSISTENT. For example, avoid putting the initials of the translation in parentheses one time and then not putting them in parentheses the next time. Choose one way of doing it and stick with it within the same Question, Note, Answer, etc. For what it's worth, on the copyright page of the NIV, it says: "the initials (NIV) must appear at the end of each quotation." |
