Bible Question:
The question mark in this verse is not in some other translations. Was Jesus asking Thomas a question ? A popular reading in other translations says "you have believed" another says "thou hast believed" These seem to show Jesus is affirming Thomas's belief. Thanks for any input. KenD |
Bible Answer: Greetings KenD! Punction in the Greek manuscripts was added later and was not always very consistent. Thus, in some cases, like this one, there is divergent opinions. According to my textual apparatus, the following translations all take Jesus's words as a statement: TR AV NKJV RV ASV NEB NIV. While the following take His words as a question: WH RSV NRSV NASV. Either way, there isn't really much difference in meaning. Under both forms of punctuation, Jesus is exalting the faith of those who haven't seen Him over those who have seen.
