Bible Question:
Did Christ's disciples receive the Holy Spirit before Pentecost? If so, why did He tell them to wait for it? |
Bible Answer: John 7:39 (But He spoke this about the Spirit, which they who believed on Him should receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.) The Holy Spirit was promised to be given by the Lord, and received by those who believed on Him, at a time in the future that would occur after Jesus was glorified. John 17:1 Jesus spoke these words and lifted up His eyes to Heaven and said, Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son so that Your Son also may glorify You The “hour” Jesus was glorified was at the cross. This fulfilled John 7:39 of when the Holy Spirit would be free to be given to those “who believed on Him”. John 20:22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. Romans 10:9 says that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. This is the very first time the disciples were able to believe in their heart “that God has raised Him from the dead”. Thus the Holy Spirit had now been given and received just as John 7:39 had prophesied. Jesus Lives! retxar |
