Subject: water into wine |
Bible Note: Greetings Jim! I have no problem with those who disagree with me on this issue. If you want to see my reasoning on this point, search for my post on wine on another thread. However, I would point out that the view that it is okay to drink alcohol rests on several assumptions that I don't think can be defended in Scripture. 1) The first is that "wine" always means an alchololic beverage. There were a wide range of meanings for wine in Scripture ranging from fresh juice to strong drink. 2) The second is that they had no way to keep "wine" from fermenting. There are historical records that describe how to keep wine from fermenting, for a time at least. 3) That a natural fermenation justifies the consumption of hard alcohol today. Even the strongest of drinks in Bible times was very weak compared to what is available today. 4) That Jesus would make an alcoholic beverage, when in the OT is forbidden to priests, kings, and nazarites. Which is also described a biting like an adder. My own personal opinion is that it is inconsistent with Scripture, our witness, and a Spirit controlled life. p.s. - I love Lewis, but I would disagree with him on this point.
