Bible Question: Why did water flow when Jesus' side was pierced while on the cross? |
Bible Answer: scjm, Physically because the periocadial sac arounfd the heart accumulated fluid when one died from crucifixion as a result of asphyxiation through exhaustion. Spiritually interpreted it is like the water which flowed from the rock in the desert in Numbers 20:10-13. In the palestinian Targum, an Aramaic version of the Old Testament, blood and water flowed from the rock. See also 1 Cor 10:4. Other interpretations of the blood and water which flow from the side of Christ are that they represent baptism and the eucharist or that they represent the baptism by water and the baptism of blood suffered by the martyrs.
