AMPLIFIED 2015 | John 19:19 Pilate also wrote an inscription [on a placard] and put it on the cross. And it was written: "JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS." [Matt 27:33-44; Mark 15:22-32; Luke 23:33-43] |
Bible Question (short): What does "I N R I" mean? |
Question (full): I own a small print of Grunewald's (German 1465-1528) painting, "The Small Crucifixion" (1505), that depicts Christ on the Cross and three weeping and praying individuals at the foot of His cross (John, Mary and Mary?). However, at the top of the cross just above Jesus' head, the painting depicts a sign above His head that simply states the letters "I N R I". My question is: What do these Latin? or Roman? letters "I N R I" stand for and what is their meaning? You can see a small picture of this print at http://www.allposters.com, which contains many religious prints of famous paintings, including the original "The Last Supper", which I also own. |
