Bible Question: Any comments on this verse? Just what happened that caused these who sought Jesus to draw back and fall to the ground? |
Bible Answer: Hi, Brazos... We simply are not told the cause. Various commentators differ. For example, Albert Barnes states, "There is no proof that there was here any miraculous power, any mere physical force, and to suppose that there was greatly detracts from the moral sublimity of the scene." Meanwhile, John Gill says, "...immediately upon his speaking these words, which were delivered with so much majesty and authority, and were attended with such a divine power." Meanwhile, Robert Jamieson says, "...struck down by a power such as that which smote Saul of Tarsus and his companions to the earth (Acts 26:14)." Since we are not told, we can only speculate.
