Bible Question:
Can I ask why it is assumed that say, the passage in the Gospel of John (chapters 13-17) applies to all individual Christians; yet the passage is (mainly) a monologue addressed to the Apostles. What is the exegetical basis for assuming all scriptural teaching can be applied to any individual Christian, viz. has personal application. (Of course, I realize it is all profitable information; i.e. to hear what Jesus told his disciple would happen to them, but similarly it is interesting and informative to read chapter after chapter of the wrong advice given to Job). For example, John 14:26 states that the Holy Spirit will remind the disciples of everything Jesus has taught them verbally. Certainly, it is being said to the disciples in the first instance. John 14:30 'I will not talk with you much longer...' is specifically addressed to the disciples before His death. How do we deal with the whole issue of whether we can legitimately apply a Scripture to us? Contrarily, John 14:12 is addressed to all believers. 13:38 is about Peter and the rooster. If I thought 17:15 applied to me, it would be virtual blasphemy. What are the general principles for applying Scripture to ourselves, if others are being addressed. Regards Dalcent |
Bible Answer: Hi, Dalcent! You are correct in noting that there are specific events and specific people that cannot be taken outside Scriptural context... But even the betrayal, the denial, and the crucifixion of Jesus are events that have been perpetuated throughout time by Christians: When we place ourselves or the world above Jesus... When we usurp His Authority... When we deny Him... When we reject/circumvent the Word... When we teach others our personal views of Scripture rather than humbly obey Scripture... It is Scripture that testefies to our obligation to apply God's Word to our lives: Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28:19-20) "make disciples of all nations, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." Clearly, Jesus not only expects the disciples to indoctrinate the world, but He expects them to teach them to obey everything He has commanded them! "My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. (John 17:20-23) We are not meant to operate in a vacuum! Our call is to be united in Jesus with all of His disciples! This unity cannot be attained if we do not have one basic doctrine... as admonished by Paul (1 Corinthians 12:3-13)--Jesus Christ's teachings, aside from very specific events, are transcendent! Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" (John 11:25-26) "He who believes in me will live" Jesus is God, He is not limited by time or space: who ever believes in Him will live! Jesus instituted His Church (Matthew 16:18-19) to facilitate the News of the Kingdom to all that by hearing the Word would believe! Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!" Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. (John 20:28-29, 30-31) This combined passage demonstrate that Salvation through Faith in Jesus, is offered to all, not just to the Eleven--those that were Jesus' contemporaries--but to all who, through the preaching of the Word, come to believe in Jesus!
