Subject: Loved by Jesus ! A meditation. |
Bible Note: Dear Roger -- Your first post, a "meditation" on Bible memorization, is a good one. My first ventures into hiding God's word in my heart (Psalm 119:11) came early in life. I was a young boy in Sunday school class and the teacher (God rest her soul) was a stickler for memorizing verses of Scripture. Even now after so many years I can still recite many of those sweet passages that I learned by heart. Nowadays the storing up of God's word in the little gray cells has become something of a lost art, I fear. Perhaps part of the problem is that we have too many "Bibles," and I'm speaking of the overwhelming number of new translations, to the making of which there seems no end. That may be a problem, but it is not insurmountable. It is no great task to pick and choose a translation for memory work and stick by it. I rather would doubt that choosing a translation from which to memorize passages is the real problem. Likely as not the real problem is the same as it's always been, indolence and laziness. As you've doubtlessly discovered, memorization is real work and demands much time and effort. But its fruits are sweet. I've been carrying around in my head for 60 years a number of passages of God's word, and many have been the times that their company has brought me strength in times of weakness, hope in despair, joy in sorrow. Keep up the good work with full assurance that your time and effort in hiding God's word in your heart will be rewarded with a richer, fuller life in His blessed Son. --Hank |
