NASB | John 15:4 "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | John 15:4 "Remain in Me, and I [will remain] in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself without remaining in the vine, neither can you [bear fruit, producing evidence of your faith] unless you remain in Me. |
Subject: Abide in Christ. |
Bible Note: Good notes! The Oxford Annotated RSV states, "As the true vine Jesus was the true Israel, fulfilling the vocation in which the old Israel had failed (Is. 5:1-7; Jer. 2:21; Ezek. 19:10-14). The fruit bearing (Gal. 5:22-23) of the new Israel (the church) springs from union (actual incorporation) with him (v.5), through prayer (v.7), and loving obedience (vv.9-10), issuing in joy (v.11)." The Ryrie Expanded Edition Study Bible states, "John explains what this means when he uses the same word in 1 John 3:24. Abiding depends on keeping Christ's commandments (v.10)." |
