AMPLIFIED 2015 | John 15:16 "You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you and I have appointed and placed and purposefully planted you, so that you would go and bear fruit and keep on bearing, and that your fruit will remain and be lasting, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name [as My representative] He may give to you. |
Bible Question: what does it mean when he says you have not chosen me,but I have chosen you |
Bible Answer: Greetings DrewBoy73, John 15:16 "You didn't chose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name." [NLT] Cross References: John 6:70; 13:18; 15:5,7,19; 1 John 4:10 [Matt. 28:19; Mark 16:15; Col. 1:6], John 14:13; 16:23,24; Deut. 7:6 Here is some commentary on this verse: "15:16 Jesus made the first choice- to love and to die for us, to invite us to live with him forever. We make the next choice- to accept or reject his offer. Without his choice, we would have no choice to make." (1) "15:16 I chose you: Jesus had initiated the relationship with His disciples (see 1 John 4:10). It started with selection, moved to servanthood, and grew to friendship. .." (2) "15:16 I chose you. Cf. v. 19. In case any pretense might exist among the disciples in terms of spiritual pride because of the privileges they enjoyed, Jesus made it clear that such privilege rested not in their own merit, but on His sovereign choice of them. God chose Israel (Is. 45:4; Amos 3:2), but not for any merit (Deut. 7:7; 9:4-6). God elected angels to be forever holy (1 Tim. 5:21). He elected believers to salvation apart from any merit (Matt. 24:24,31 ...Rom. 8:29-33; Eph. 1:3-6; Col. 3:12; Titus 1:1; 1 Pet. 1:2)..." (3) "15:16 I chose you...bear fruit...ask. Disciples normally chose the particular rabbi to whom they wanted to be attached, but it was not so with Jesus' disciples. He chose them, and for a purpose- the bearing of fruit. We usually desire a strong prayer life in order that we may be fruitful, but here it is the other way around. Jesus enables us to bear fruit, and then the Father will hear our prayers..."
